Matthew and Eliza were the most common names given to children born last year according to figures published by the National Statistics Office yesterday.

The second favourite boys’ name was Jake, while Luke, which had been top for three consecutive years, fell to third.

Elena was the second most popular girls’ name with Julia a close third. Pop culture inspirations remained rife, with Denzel, Rihanna and Gerrard all commonplace.
