A Romanian man yesterday confessed to stealing €2,700 in salaries from restaurant staff two Sundays ago.

Silvius Pileander, 25, resident in Swieqi, was seen on CCTV going behind the unattended counter and taking the wad of cash from the till of the Aroma restaurant in Sliema.

Restaurant owner Mario Pisani helped the police investigation by posting online a picture lifted from the CCTV showing Mr Pileander.

Mr Pileander was arrested at his house late on Monday and was found to have dyed his hair blonde to hide his identity.

Defence lawyer Roberto Montalto said his client suffered schizophrenia, adding that while his client was admitting guilt, he would still ask for the case to be put off until evidence could be produced. The case was put off by a week.
