A wheelchair bound occupational therapist was awarded the Worker of the Year 2011 prize during a ceremony at the Palace in Valletta on Friday night.

Vickie Gauci, 45, works with the National Commission for Disabled People and is currently involved in a €2 million project aimed at helping people with disabilities live more independently. She also lectures at the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Malta.

The judging panel awarded Ms Gauci the prize for being consistently hard-working, efficient, honest and determined in the face of day-to-day obstacles.

Joseph Debono, employed for over 22 years with ST Microelectronics, was given the Special Mention prize.

President George Abela hosted the ceremony.
