Despite the huge efforts by The Times to hamper Joseph Muscat, he has shown greatness in victory. “I am humbled by the size of our victory,” he said. What a contrast to his predecessor.

That is the attitude that the people of Malta voted for. No arrogance, no big headedness. He did not say that he owns Malta, as Lawrence Gonzi had done when he said he owned Gozo.

Muscat’s greatness lies in his calm and considered utterings and his unifying words. In the days and weeks, nay, years to come, we shall see him embracing his erstwhile enemies. Take my word for it, that is the way he is made.

In five years he built a Labour Party from a rubbish dump article into a movement that has garnered the largest majority since 1955. A movement that has been embraced by a large majority of youth, middle-aged and senior citizens because they believed his calm words, believed in his sobriety, believed in his common sense.

Never in Malta’s history have we produced such a gifted man. But, then, this country always gets the leaders it deserves.

Muscat will be welcomed with open arms in the EU he knows so well. Already, messages of welcome have started to pour in from the EU. He being no stranger to Europe augurs well for Malta. Malta will look forward to the EU presidency in 2017 and, young as he is, it will be an honour for Malta to have him as Prime Minister.

His team of young MPs are rearing to go. They are eager to keep their promises to the people, to be of the people and for the people. I have followed all that has been said by different candidates and they all emphasise that they want to stay close to the people in their needs.

They have promised that they will be tackling the energy problem – the people are waiting for action in this regard. We can no longer pay such high prices for our energy when, at the same time, a band of people entrusted by Gonzi to run Enemalta have allegedly pocketed millions and millions of euros.

What kind of justice is that? The courts are in duty bound to deliver justice, justice that is commensurate with the grave injustice these people have inflicted on the people, especially the poor.
