Please allow me to share the wonderful experience of living in Valletta. On May 11 at 6.30 a.m. I opened the door of where I live to go to work as I do each day. On the other side of the street I saw two policemen and asked them if anything was wrong. They said they were there to tell people to remove their cars because a conference was being held in the vicinity and they had orders to remove all vehicles in our part of the street. I explained to them that my better half was abroad and that it was problematic for me to remove the car as I do not drive.

I was told that was my problem and also that if the car was not removed then it would be towed at our expense.

I almost felt guilty that I had the temerity to question why in such circumstances our car had to be removed. Such a high-handed attitude is in my book deplorable. What if we were both abroad? We would have returned home not to find our car. And why, simply because someone wanted the street cleared of parked vehicles so that, apparently, some big wig could pass.

I half expect that next time we may be asked to vacate our premises just in case. I hope this is not the harbinger of “better” things yet to come and that in future a bit more consideration is shown to us Valletta residents!
