Playwriting contest

This year’s edition of the Trinity College London’s playwriting competition is aimed at bridging the gap in contemporary drama for young people.

“Despite an escalation in contemporary literature for children – from the realism of Jacqueline Wilson to the imaginative world of J.K. Rowling – there has been no similar growth in contemporary plays. Playwrights trying to feed the gap often end up adapting popular novels and folk stories rather than writing something new,” a college spokesman said.

Aspiring writers of any age and ability are asked to write a one-act play in English (20-40 minutes in duration) for young people: either for performers of 11 years and under or for an audience of 12-16 year olds.

Winners in each category will receive £1,000 and have their plays published. Runners up receive a prize of £500.

The closing date is September 1. For an entry form and more information on the judges and the competition itself go to www.trinitycollege.co.uk/playwriting or contact Veronica Bezzina at the Malta Centre For Trinity Guildhall Examination on 7979 3737 or via info@masquerademalta.com.
