The works on show at The Secret Code of Rocks are sublime, timeless, unique and overwhelmingly beautiful. They reveal an impeccable natural beauty untouched by man.
The artist Li Yingjie and Mother Nature connive to stimulate thought and arouse our sensitivity and sensibility. The simile ‘as cold as marble’ fades into insignificance as these non-sentient rocks become animate, warm, sensual, an eloquent language, history, a primordial epic.
Stone is matter produced in a gradual and slow process under pressure, stress and tension in time; a million, a billion a trillion years. It is the miracle in nature that turns dust into clear, transparent diamonds, into precious stones. It is the subject of physics, chemistry and geology. It is the history of time. It is the result of myth and magic.
• The Secret Code of Rocks runs at the China Cultural Centre, Melita Street, Valletta until Monday, June 27.
It will then be showing at Cavalieri Art Hotel in St Julian’s between July 1-15.
