The article entitled ‘Government tight-lipped about talks with Brussels’ (January 25) unfortunately got a lot of the facts wrong.

The Parliamentary Secretary for Justice confirms he was engaged in a positive meeting on the citizenship-by-investment programme (not cash-for-citizenship programme) with the directorate general in charge of the matter at European Commission level but refutes all the other “facts” contained in the report about the subject.

Editorial note: It is astounding that a government communications officer writes to point out that an article 'got a lot of the facts wrong' without pointing out what those supposed incorrect facts are. Ironically, all her letter does is confirm the central fact of the story: which is that a meeting took place, as reported by Times of Malta, between the parliamentary secretary and the European Commission. Why did the government not issue a press release about this?

On her other point, the government can use whatever euphemism it sees fit to describe the cash for citizenship scheme –we, on the other hand, reserve our right to refer to it in a manner our readers understand.
