The Council of Europe, in collaboration with the Chamber of Advocates, will be organising a distance learning course titled ‘Community sanctions and alternative measures to detention as one solution to prison overcrowding’.

The course, which is free of charge, will be open to warranted, practising lawyers and to legal professionals.

It will focus on the purpose of community sanctions and measures to understand how they can help reduce prison populations. Available non-custodial options at different stages of the judicial process will be analysed and the special groups of offenders particularly likely to suffer adverse effects in prison will be examined. There will also be a module on problems linked to the detention of illegal immigrants and asylum seekers.

A meeting will take place tomorrow at the Chamber of Advocates.

Interested parties should e-mail the chamber to express their interest on info@avukati.org.
