In a recent commemorative event on the threat to democracy in the 1980s, organised by Nationalist MEP David Casa, Nationalist Party leader Simon Busuttil said the presence of Eddie Fenech Adami – without uttering a word – symbolises freedom.

Such a reminder is essential because as Nationalist MEP Roberta Metsola pointed out, if one forgets the past, one risks re-experiencing certain unpleasant realities.

In this regard Fenech Adami is an icon of statesmanship underpinned by strong, moral values and enhanced by the belief in the triumph of truth.

His attributes and their mark on society were singled out by Polish President Lech Kaczynski during an official visit to Poland in January 2009:

“Mr President, you are a model of political success. You have been Prime Minister for 16 years, President for five years and Leader of the Opposition for 10 years. Every politician would like to hope for such tenure. May the life of the entire Maltese nation be as successful as your political career.”
