Matthew Micallef, a 13-year-old swimmer, was the toast of the Stella Maris College team at this year’s World Sports Festival in Vienna.

The festival attracted the participation of over 3,000 athletes from 30 countries.

Micallef won four medals, half of the school’s total haul, after racing to gold in the 100m freestyle and also winning silver in the 50m freestyle and 50m backstroke.

Micallef also swam the 50m butterfly race, finishing third.

In badminton, Garrett Bonello teamed up with Czech Jiri Bures in doubles and the duo claimed silver.

Two bronze medals were won in table tennis.

Daniel Musu took bronze in the U-13 singles event and then linked up with Ayrton Galea in the U-13 doubles and also finished third.

Wrestler Gary Giordimaina placed third in the 50kg category.

This was Stella Maris’s second participation at the World Sports Festival following last year’s debut when the squad returned home with eight medals – one silver and seven bronze.
