Swieqi United FC yesterday said they had immediately informed the Malta FA’s integrity officer Franz Tabone about the bribery attempt that allegedly took place during the match against Żejtun Corinthians at the Mosta ground on Saturday.

In a statement, club president Justin Fenech said Mr Tabone will be handing over the information to the police.

“Swieqi United FC would like to make it clear that at no time did any player or club official allege that Żejtun Corinthians FC were involved in the incidents reported,” Dr Fenech said.

“We have always made it clear that the influence came from unidentified sources. It is in the best interest of all those who love football that these incidents are tackled head on and therefore all clubs should stand united.

“Swieqi United FC stands by its players and we take the opportunity to thank them for the commitment, loyalty and positive attitude.

“The club has pledged its full support to the fight against match fixing and fully backs the MFA in this regard.”

Earlier this week, Żejtun Corinthians FC urged the authorities to open immediate investigations into what was alleged by Swieqi goalkeeper Matthew Mulholland in a post on his facebook page.

Mulholland had claimed that an unidentified person had offered him €500 to “get sent off” during Swieqi’s 1-0 victory over Żejtun in Division Two
