Malta called for stronger EU engagement in Libya and Syria during a meeting of the general affairs council yesterday.
European Affairs Parliamentary Secretary Ian Borg, who led the Maltese delegation, emphasised the need for stronger engagement in addressing the conflicts in the southern neighbourhood.
The meeting was held in preparation for the informal heads of government meeting on Thursday during which security is expected to be a main theme.
The general affairs council called for stronger cooperation and coordination between member states seeking to balance security with respect for fundamental freedoms.
Dr Borg lent Malta’s support to measures aimed at preventing and combating terrorism. He said it was important to send a strong political message that the EU will do what it takes to ensure citizens feel safe.
At the same time he reiterated the importance of safeguarding citizens’ lifestyle and their right to live in a democratic society without compromising privacy.
“This must also be done without resorting to unnecessary alarm that can disrupt citizens’ lives and practices.”
One of the measures mentioned in the council was the creation of an EU-wide Passenger Name Record (PNR) system to facilitate cooperation.
Prime Minister Joseph Muscat told The Sunday Times of Malta that changing the Schengen visa-free travel rules to ensure better passenger checks at the EU’s external borders should not be excluded.
