Starting as of the end of this month, the Transport Ministry’s promised Maintenance Unit will be deployed for up to 14 hours a day in streets and roads, divided into four zones, to take immediate action on road maintenance, Minister Joe Mizzi told Parliament yesterday.

The people will be roped in to help in at least two ways: traffic lights will have affixed phone numbers where inoperative systems can be reported; and a website will be installed where people can post reports, including pictures, about situations posing danger or needing repair.

Mr Mizzi said the website would constitute a pressure point for the unit’s immediate action. The unit would be using electric vehicles.

Answering a number of supplementary questions from Opposition MPs, he also said Transport Malta was engaged in meetings with local councils with a view to coming up with a comprehensive national parking policy which would also take into account different needs for different zones.
