Tuna pens left stranded on one of the two small beaches in the picturesque village of Marsaxlokk are unfortunately a common scene.

The fish pens block a large part of the bay near Marsaxlokk Aquatic Sports Club and sometimes also the little beach near the swings called Magħluq.

These eyesores are a nuisance for weeks at a time. People are obviously unhappy. In addition, they can also pose as a danger to children and youths who are adventurous.

The latest is even more unfortunate because the new swimming zone markers recently installed by the Malta Maritime Authority to protect swimmers in the area near the waterpolo pitch have been damaged by a barge carrying the tuna pen to the beach. This is not only irresponsible but also unacceptable behaviour.

Hopefully, the necessary action will be taken to eliminate tuna pens from the beautiful shores of Marsaxlokk, which is visited both by tourists and all Malta for its picturesque setting.
