St Benedict College Chess Academy recently held a Saturday afternoon tournament which showcased children’s talents, chess techniques, mental strategies, creative thinking and discipline.

Fifty players took part, ranging from students aged between five and 16 who attend one of the college’s primary or secondary schools, to parents or guardians of children attending the academy classes.

The Cachia family dominated the beginner’s tournament, with Sile, Sue and Sian Cachia placing first, second and third respectively, while Alyssia Ruth won the Best Female trophy.

In the second tournament for students in their second and third year at the academy the winners with full scores were Kurt Bondin and Maria Victoria Vella.

The runners-up were Miguel Sacco and Dillon Portelli. Third places were won by Karl Ciantar, Kain Spiteri and Josephine Vella. The Best Adult reward in this category was won by Keely Carabott.

The third tournament for advanced players was won by Jake Darmanin, with Christian Schembri and Jamie Farrugia winning second and third places respectively.
