Motorcycling: Suzuki’s MotoGP rookie Alex Rins has broken his right ankle in an accident while training on a motocross bike, the team said yesterday. Suzuki said a scan in Barcelona had revealed a partial fracture of the Spaniard’s talus bone. The medical team decided against surgery and will examine the rider again on Monday before he is due to travel to Argentina for the second race of the season. Rins was the top MotoGP rookie in last Sunday’s Qatar season-opener, finishing ninth.

Canoeing: A coach at British Canoeing was suspended in December after a formal complaint, the BBC has reported. An independent investigation into the complaint is still underway, the report said. “We can confirm that, in response to a formal complaint in December 2016, a member of our performance team has been suspended,” a British Canoeing spokesperson told the BBC. British sport has been rocked by allegations of bullying and sexism in elite performance programmes with concerns raised that the push for medals had come at the expense of athlete welfare.

Cricket: Grant Elliott, who smashed a six off South Africa paceman Dale Steyn to put New Zealand into their maiden World Cup final in 2015, has confirmed his retirement from international cricket after signing a deal to play in England’s Twenty20 competition. The all-rounder joins New Zealand internationals Colin de Grandhomme and Jeetan Patel at the Birmingham Bears after signing a Kolpak deal, which means he gives up his right to play for his country and is not classed as an overseas player in county cricket.

Rugby Union: Australia flyhalf Bernard Foley has been ruled out of the New South Wales Waratahs’ clash against Super Rugby leaders Canterbury Crusaders tomorrow after suffering a relapse of the concussion symptoms that have plagued him this season. After missing the Waratahs’ first four games, Foley returned for the away win over the Melbourne Rebels last week but his symptoms reappeared after the match in a worrying sign for the Wallabies playmaker. Foley said his relapse had “nothing to do with the game last week” but was unsure when he might return.
