Tennis: Dreadlocked German Dustin Brown, 31, will have the chance to follow up last year’s Wimbledon heroics after being handed a wildcard for the championships yesterday. Brown, ranked 87th in the world, provided the shock of the tournament 12 months ago when he came through qualifying before overwhelming twice former champion Rafael Nadal in the second round with a scintillating display of attacking tennis. Czech veteran Radek Stepanek, 37, has also been handed one of the Wimbledon wildcards.

Olympics: Tokyo governor Yoichi Masuzoe resigned yesterday after coming under fire for misuse of tax money, the latest embarrassment as the Japanese capital prepares to host the 2020 Olympics. He is the second governor to quit since Tokyo won the right to hold the 2020 Games, though officials say his departure will not have an impact on preparations. His predecessor quit over a funding scandal just months after the city got the Games.

Rugby Union: England will restore George Ford at fly-half for Saturday’s second Test against Australia at Park. Eddie Jones will reunite the Grand Slam-winning 10-12 axis of Ford and Owen Farrell as the tourists target the victory that will complete an historic series in the southern hemisphere. Ford was brought on in the 29th minute of the 39-28 victory in Brisbane with Luther Burrell, who had been exposed in defence on several occasions, making way.
