Giro d’Italia: Slovenian Primoz Roglic won the Chianti Classic individual time trial that formed the ninth stage of the Giro d’Italia yesterday, while Italian Gianluca Brambilla held on to the leader’s pink jersey. Roglic, from the Lotto-NL team, clocked 51 minutes 45 seconds over the hilly 40.5-km course which ended in the centre of Greve in Chianti. Brambilla, who like other late starters, had to ride through heavy rain showers, just managed to hold on to the lead he took on Saturday with a one-second gap on Etixx-Quick Step team-mate Bob Jungels of Luxembourg after setting the 17th best time.

Rugby Sevens: Samoa completed a stunning second-half comeback to beat World Series leaders Fiji 29-26 in the final of the Paris Sevens yesterday. Samoa fought back from 26-7 down to secure their first Sevens Cup since they won in Dubai in 2012 with tries from Faalemiga Selesele, Siaosi Asofolau, Belgium Tuatagaloa and a Tila Mealoi double. “At half-time you’d think we were dead and buried,” Samoa coach Damian McGrath said. “The resolve and the self belief was all here... If we got the momentum, we had a chance and when we saw Fiji flagging, we went for the jugular.”

Superbikes: Reigning World Superbikes champion Jonathan Rea increased his overall lead in this year’s standings with a third-place finish in yesterday’s race in Sepang. Northern Ireland’s Rea now leads Wales’ Chaz Davies by 42 points after the weekend’s two races in Malaysia. Honda star Nicky Hayden claimed his maiden World Superbikes win yesterday, the rookie American winning out in rain-swept conditions. Ducati’s Davide Giugliano mounted a late charge to steal a second-place finish, but Rea’s solid weekend work kept him top of the season’s standings.
