Doping: The Turkish Athletics Federa-tion has given two-year suspen-sions to 31 athletes for drug violations. At least three of the athletes competed at the 2012 Olympics, including hammer thrower Esref Apak. Bans had been expected after the IAAF conducted a large number of tests ahead of and during the Mediterranean Games in June. Apak was one of eight athletes who tested positive following the Euro Team Championships in Gateshead the same month.

Horse Racing: Australian jockey Simone Montgomerie has died, aged 26, after suffering fatal injuries in a fall at Fannie Bay racecourse, Darwin. Montgomerie was riding Riahgrand in the sixth race on the Darwin Cup card but fell from her mount in the straight. She received treatment on the track from paramedics and was rushed to Royal Darwin Hospital in a critical condition, but she died shortly after.

Motoring: Yvan Muller continued his domination of the 2013 World Touring Car Championship with a lights-to-flag victory in Race 1 at the inaugural event at Termas de Rio Hondo in Argentina. The Frenchman, who sealed pole position by over half-a-second from Chevrolet team-mate Tom Chilton, never looked in danger of slipping out of the lead as he extended his advantage at the top of the drivers championship to 144 points.

Tennis: Juan Martin Del Potro, of Argentina, overcame a shaky opening set to defeat big-serving American John Isner 3-6 6-1 6-2 and win the $1.3 million Citi Open, underscoring his status as a major threat at the upcoming US Open. Del Potro, playing in his first tournament since losing to Novak Djokovic in an epic Wimbledon semi-final a month ago, was at his best when it mattered most, converting four of six break-point chances.
