Residents and tourists along Gżira seafront yesterday had to endure the unpleasant stench of open sewage flowing into the sea, after a fault developed in one of the main sewers.

Though the area is not an official bathing zone, it still impacted heavily on the many businesses along the seafront, especially the pleasure cruises.

A spokesman for the Health Ministry confirmed that the Waste Water Unit of the Water Services Corporations was carrying out urgent remedial works, following a complaint lodged around noon.

However, he pointed out that an investigation initiated last month following complaints filed on July 17, did not identify any sewage overflow.
