Golf: European Ryder Cup skipper Jose Maria Olazabal has named fellow Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez as his fourth vice captain for next month’s match against the United States. Jimenez, 48, will join Dane Thomas Bjorn, Northern Irishman Darren Clarke and Ireland’s Paul McGinley as assistant captains at the Medinah Country Club in Illinois from September 28-30.

Paralympics: Britain’s Prince Philip will miss the Paralympic Games opening ceremony as he recovers from an infection, but Queen Elizabeth II will still attend, Buckingham Palace said. The 91-year-old royal consort was discharged from hospital on Monday after spending five nights in hospital for a recurrence of a bladder infection. The queen, accompanied by her husband, declared the London 2012 Olympic Games open last month and the couple were expected together at the Paralympics opening ceremony on Wednesday.

Tennis: John Isner ousted Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 to stay on track to retain his Winston-Salem ATP title. Isner, seeded third in the US Open tune-up event, will face Czech Tomas Berdych in the final. Berdych defeated seventh-seeded American Sam Querrey 6-4, 6-3 in the semi-finals.

Athletics: US runner Allyson Felix, triple Olympics champion, will compete in the Zagreb meeting on September 4, organisers said yesterday. “Allyson ran 21.69sec the 200m this summer, she won slightly slower with 21.88 sec in London. Both results were season’s bests,” the organisers said at the official website of the Zagreb meeting. Such results were “more than enough for the Zagreb meeting record, as the one of 22.53sec set by Nigeria’s Mercy Nku in 1999 has been standing for (too) long,” they said.

Farah – a proud dad: Mo Farah’s wife Tania has given birth to twin girls, Britain’s double Olympic champion said yesterday. “Great news about the birth of my little baby girls! Twins...! Thanks to my wife..!!,” he said on his Twitter account. Somalia-born Farah won the 5,000 and 10,000 metres at the London Olympics earlier this month.
