Tour De France: Peter Sagan, of Slovakia, won the third stage of the Tour de France yesterday, easing home in the final 100 metres of a 197 kilometre ride from Orchies to the French seaport town of Boulogne-sur-Mer. It was the Liquigas rider’s second stage win having triumphed in Sunday’s first full stage. Fabian Cancellara, of Switzerland, retained the overall leader’s yellow jersey.

Basketball: New York Knicks guard Jeremy Lin has withdrawn from the USA Select team that will train against the 2012 USA national team during a training camp in Las Vegas. Lin told USA Basketball that he was withdrawing because he is now a NBA restricted free agent. Members of USA Select will be in Nevada, beginning tomorrow to train with the national team.

London 2012: Australia’s Olympic athletes will be banned from using sleeping pills, officials said yesterday, after ex-swimming star Grant Hackett admitted to a sedative addiction when he was still competing. Australian Olympic Committee chief John Coates said prescription medications such as the powerful sleeping pill Stilnox would be banned for the first time at London after Hackett said he had developed a “heavy reliance” on the drug.

Boxing: Ukrainian boxing champion Vitali Klitschko will defend his heavyweight title against Germany’s Manuel Charr in Moscow on September 8. Klitschko, 40, enjoys a professional record of 44-2 with 40 KOs and the bout at the 30,000-capacity SC Olimpiyski sports arena in Moscow will be his 17th world heavyweight championship fight.
