Cycling: Britain’s Team Sky rider Bradley Wiggins won the Criterium du Dauphine for the second year running yesterday, as Spain’s Daniel Moreno won the seventh and final stage. Moreno edged ahead of compatriot Luis Leon Sanchez and Australia’s Cadel Evans, last year’s Tour de France winner, to win the 124.5km ride from Morzine to Chatel in the French Alps. Wiggins’ triumph capped a fantastic race for his Team Sky, who had three of the top four riders in the general classification.

Volleyball: Australia clinched the ticket to the London Olympics when they outgunned China to take the top place among Asian teams at the men’s volleyball qualifying tournament yesterday. With a 25-12, 25-20, 25-13 victory, Australia ended the tournament with a 5-2 win-loss record for 15 points, making them unreachable for Iran and Japan. “Today was a do-or-die game again, the final show and it was up to us to perform,” said Australian captain Igor Yudin.

Basket, NBA: LeBron James scored 31 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to power Miami over Boston 101-88 and give the Heat a berth against the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA Finals. Dwyane Wade added 23 points and Chris Bosh contributed 19 as, together with James, the Heat’s ‘Big Three’ scored all 28 of Miami’s points in the fourth quarter. Miami took the best-of-seven Eastern Conference championship series 4-3 to reach the NBA Finals, which start tomorrow in Oklahoma City.

Tennis: The Davis Cup semi-final between Spain and the United States will be played in Gijon over the weekend of September 14-16, the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET) announced yesterday. The tie will be staged at the Parque Hermanos Castro in the city, situated on the Atlantic coast in the Asturias region of northern Spain. “It was hard work getting it there, but we never doubted the tie would take place in Gijon,” RFET president Jose Luis Escanuela said.
