Rugby Union: Six Nations Grand Slam champions Wales will play the ACT Brumbies in a mid-week game on their tour of Australia next month. Wales, who are playing three internationals against Australia, will take on the Super 15 provincial team at Canberra Stadium on June 12. The Wallabies face Wales in three Tests in Brisbane on June 9, Melbourne on June 16 and Sydney on June 23.

Motorcycling: Britain’s Lee Richardson, a former world junior champion, was killed on Sunday in a speedway accident in Wroclaw, Poland. The 33-year-old, who had competed in Poland for the last 13 years, was riding for the Marma Rzeszow club against Sparta Wroclaw when he fell off his machine. He died later in a Wroclaw hospital.

Basket, NBA: LeBron James, who earned his third league MVP award last weekend, finished with a game-high 32 points as star-studded Miami beat Indiana 95-86 to take the opening game of their second round play-off series. James has won the MVP award three out of the last four years and is chasing his first ever NBA title.

Swimming: World record holder Ryan Lochte beat runner-up Conor Dwyer to win the 200 metre individual medley at the Charlotte Grand Prix swim meet on Sunday. “It felt good to actually have a decent swim,” said Lochte, who swam in a regular suit for the first time last weekend. American Lochte used a strong finishing kick to beat Dwyer by nearly two seconds and set a meet record of one minute, 57.63 seconds. Dwyer clocked 1:59.29 and Eric Shanteau finished third in 2:00.46.

Rugby Sevens: New Zealand coach Gordon Tietjens has been inducted into the IRB Hall of Fame after his team sealed their 10th Sevens World Series title in 13 years. The New Zealand Union said induct-ees were not normally eligible for Hall of Fame honours until three years after they retired but the IRB made an exception for Tietjens because of his outstanding contribution to the game. Tietjens, 57, signed a contract extension last month that will see him coach the Kiwis when sevens makes its Olympic debut in Rio in 2016.

Giro d’Italia: Spain’s Francisco Ventoso (Movistar) claimed victory in the ninth stage of the Giro d’Italia in a sprint finish yesterday, with Canada’s Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin) holding on to the pink jersey. Mark Cavendish (Sky) was unable to take part in the sprint after being involved in a crash on the last bend. With 400 metres remaining, Italy’s Filippo Pozzato collided with Australian Matt Goss, bringing both men down and forcing Cavendish to take evasive action but without apparently injuring himself.
