Olympics: Italian politician Mario Pescante resigned as vice-president of the IOC yesterday but denied it was due to Rome pulling out of the bid to host the 2020 Olympics. Pescante’s decision came less than a week after Prime Minister Mario Monte decided not to back Rome’s Olympic bid. Not everyone agreed with Pescante’s decision as Sports Minister Piero Gnudi described it as a loss for the country.

Basketball, NBA: Jeremy Lin flirted with a triple double but New York Knicks struggled to find the right chemistry with the return of Carmelo Anthony, losing 100-92 to New Jersey Nets on Monday. “I need to come out with more energy and the team needs to come out with more energy. That is why we lost,” said Lin. It was just the second loss since Lin’s amazing run began February 4 against the Nets when he blitzed New Jersey’s defence for 25 points.

Cricket: Ricky Ponting, cricket’s second-highest one-day scorer, vowed yesterday to fight on in Australia’s Test team despite being dumped from the limited-overs side. Despite speculation about his future, Ponting stressed that he would not be retiring from the five-day game. “I will continue playing Test cricket and I’ll continue playing for Tasmania as well,” Ponting told a news conference.
