Tennis: Former world no.1 Mats Wilander was taken to hospital in Melbourne after falling and lacerating a kidney. In a Facebook posting, Wilander on Wheels, which runs tennis clinics, said it wanted to give an update on his condition because of rumours swirling about the Swede. Wilander, 47, won seven grand slam titles, including three Australian Open titles, in a glittering career.

Rugby Union: Former Sale Sharks and England U-20 international wing Selorm Kuadey has died aged 24 after apparently taking his own life, his former club said. The Ukraine-born flier looked set for a highly-productive playing career until he was forced to retire in 2010 after suffering two long-term injuries.

Cricket: Pakistan were 42 without loss in reply to England’s first innings score of 192 all out on the opening day of the first cricket Test at Dubai Stadium yesterday. Off-spinner Saeed Ajmal took a career best 7-55. Matt Prior topscored for England with an unbeaten 70.

Boxing: British heavyweight flop Audley Harrison is to return to the ring in April with a fight against Ali Adams. Harrison last fought in November 2010 when he was soundly beaten by David Haye in a challenge for the WBA heavyweight title. The 40-year-old has since appeared in TV reality show Strictly Come Dancing.

Snooker: John Higgins got his Masters campaign off to a winning start yesterday after beating Matthew Stevens 6-2. The 36-year-old’s highest break of 90 came in the opening frame. Two moderate breaks of 44 and 30 helped Higgins make it 4-2 and, with a two-frame cushion behind him, he eased to the win.
