Lloyd: Carli Lloyd, captain and hat-trick hero for the US in their World Cup final triumph, heads the trio of nominees for FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year. Lloyd, whose treble in the 5-2 win against Japan in Vancouver in July featured an extraordinary strike from the halfway line, is joined on the shortlist by Japan’s captain Aya Miyama and Germany striker Celia Sasic. The midfielder will be favourite for the award after her historic World Cup in which she led the US to a record third title.

Play-off: Racing Club beat Independiente 2-0 in the first leg of the Libertadores Cup play-off final. Racing captain Diego Milito watched from the sidelines serving a one-match suspension after being sent off at the end of Racing’s 2-1 win over Estudiantes in the play-off semi-finals. The teams will meet again at Racing’s Cilindro next Sunday in the second leg.

Torino: Serie A club Torino have agreed terms for new deals with captain Kamil Glik and defender Nikola Maksimovic. Tuttosport said yesterday that the new contracts have been completed and that only an official announcement is now missing. Glik will be tied down with an extension and Maksimovic will sign until 2019. Team-mates Giuseppe Vives, Alessandro Gazzi, Cesare Bovo, Emiliano Moretti, Maxi Lopez and Bruno Peres all signed new deals recently.

Radoi quits: Steaua Bucharest coach Mirel Radoi stepped down from his position after the club’s 1-0 loss to league leaders FC Astra on Sunday, the Romanian champions said. “I take full responsibility for everything that happened and it’s time to leave,” the 34-yearold former Romania international Radoi said, adding he wanted to quit even before the Astra game. Radoi replaced Constantin Galca as coach in May.
