New deal: Sokratis Papastathopoulos has extended his contract with Borussia Dortmund until 2019. The Greek defender, who arrived from Werder Bremen in 2013, has made a total of 58 Bundesliga appearances for Dortmund and a further 20 in European club competition and 10 in the DFB-Pokal, and has become a regular at the heart of the defence.

Mascherano: Barcelona will appeal against the red card shown to Javier Mascherano in Sunday’s victory over Eibar. The defensive midfielder was shown a red card in the 83rd minute of Barca’s 3-1 win and could be handed a four-match ban. According to referee Carlos del Cerro Grande, Mascherano was sent off for insulting an assistant referee with an Argentinian expression.

Jagielka: Everton defender Phil Jagielka could miss up to nine weeks with medial knee ligament damage, manager Roberto Martinez has confirmed. England international Jagielka, 33, picked up the injury in the 2-1 loss at Arsenal on Saturday. “I wouldn’t expect anything longer than eight to nine weeks,” Martinez said when asked about Jagielka’s recovery.

Brattan: Manchester City have signed midfielder Luke Brattan from Brisbane Roar and loaned him to Bolton Wanderers. Born in England before moving to Australia at a young age, the 25-year-old played for Brisbane for five years. He has appeared for the Australian U-20 team and was called up to the senior squad for the first time in August.

Great love: A goal from former Flamengo striker Vagner Love gave Corinthians a 1-0 victory over his old team on Sunday to maintain their lead at the top of the table in the lowest scoring weekend of action so far this year. There were only 12 goals in 10 games, with three goalless draws and four 1-0 victories. Love coolly slotted home just before half time at the Corinthians Arena and the home side were given a helping hand when Jonas was sent off for a second yellow card on 57 minutes.
