Carrick: Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick will miss the final three games of the Premier League season with a calf problem, manager Louis van Gaal said yesterday. The 33-year-old Carrick was injured during United’s 4-2 win over Manchester City at Old Trafford last month and will not feature in the remaining matches against Crystal Palace, Arsenal and Hull City.

River Lead: River Plate scored with a late penalty to overcome city rivals Boca Juniors 1-0 and take a slender advantage into the second leg of their Libertadores Cup last 16 tie. Carlos Sanchez broke the deadlock from the spot after 81 minutes to give the home side a barely deserved win in a scrappy tie played in front of 62,000 fans at the Monumental stadium.

Qatar: Qatar have appointed Uruguayan Jose Daniel Carreno as their new head coach to steer them through the 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign. The former striker had been in charge of Qatar Stars League outfit Al Arabi this term after winning the Saudi league and cup double with Al-Nassr last year. He succeeds Algerian Djamel Belmadi, who was sacked last month after a winless group stage exit at the Asian Cup in January.

A-League: Premiers’ Plate winners Melbourne Victory brushed aside the challenge of Melbourne City to stroll into the A-League Grand Final with a 3-0 demolition in yesterday’s derby. Besart Berisha and Kosta Barbarouses scored early goals, while Archie Thompson made the game safe with a late third as the Victory, who topped the table at the end of the regular season, reached the final for the first time in five years. They will host either Sydney FC or Adelaide United in next week’s showpiece.

Benzema: Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema will be in their squad to face Valencia in La Liga today but may not be fit to start, coach Carlo Ancelotti said. Real’s injury worries are starting to ease with Benzema following Gareth Bale back into the squad, as Ancelotti’s side continue their pursuit of Barcelona at the top of the table.

Championship: Play-off SF, first leg – Brentford vs M’Boro 1-2.

Scottish Premier: Motherwell vs Kilmarnock 3-1.
