Vidal: Juventus team doctor Fabrizio Tencone said that Chile midfielder Arturo Vidal will be fit for the World Cup despite undergoing surgery just five weeks before his country’s first match of the tournament. Vidal underwent surgery on his right knee days after his club Juventus had mathematically secured the Italian league title. Tencone said: “He will be available for the World Cup. Arturo left Turin with his knee in the best possible condition after the operation. Now the Chile medical staff will evaluate him.”

Zaha: Wilfried Zaha has been withdrawn from the England Under-21s squad to take on Wales through injury. The Manchester United winger ended the season on loan at Cardiff and reported for duty at St George’s Park with a niggling injury. Given Zaha is unavailable for the upcoming Toulon tournament due to age restrictions, the 21-year-old has been rested by manager Gareth Southgate for tomorrow’s European Championship qualifier in Swansea.

Southampton: Southampton have confirmed the release of Guly do Prado, Lee Barnard and Jonathan Forte. The trio departed the club at the end of their contracts at St Mary’s, while Cody Cropper, Lloyd Isgrove, Sam McQueen, Omar Rowe and Jake Sinclair have all been offered extended stays. Guly is the biggest departure, having made 118 appearances and scored 23 goals during four seasons with the Saints.

Ellis: Jill Ellis was named head coach of the US women’s national team. Ellis took over as interim coach in early April when Tom Sermanni was fired. Her full-time appointment comes five months before the start of qualifying for next year’s World Cup in Canada. The US host the eight-nation CONCACAF qualifying tournament from which the top three teams will advance to the World Cup and the fourth will go into a play-off.

International friendly: Netherlands vs Ecuador 1-1.
