Finke: Germany’s Volker Finke, appointed as coach three weeks ago, has signed a two-year contract with Cameroon. Finke has been tasked with qualifying the Indomi-table Lions for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
US win: The US and Costa Rica claimed victories to join Mexico in a three-way tie at the top of the CONCACAF World Cup qualifying group. A last-gasp Brad Evans goal gave the US a 2-1 win in Jamaica, who sit bottom of the six-team table on two points. Costa Rica edged out Honduras 1-0 thanks to a Roy Miller goal. Mexico, who have played a game more than their rivals, missed the opportunity to maintain their two-point lead as they drew 0-0 with Panama.
Arrasate: Real Sociedad have promoted 35-year-old Jagoba Arrasate to be first team coach for next season. Arrasate was part of Philippe Montanier’s backroom staff last season. Frenchman Montanier rejected the chance of a contract extension last month despite leading Sociedad to fourth in La Liga and into the Champions League play-offs for next season. He has since joined Stade Rennes.
New rules: English Football League clubs voted unanimously to bring rules for international loans into line with domestic arrangements, closing a loophole that had allowed Watford to bring in 10 players from Udinese. Foreign loan deals were previously not subject to Football League rules which restrict match-day squads to five domestic loan players, with a maximum of four from any one club.
Tonev: Aston Villa have agreed a deal to sign Bulgaria midfielder Aleksandar Tonev from Polish side Lech Poznan. The 23-year-old has agreed terms and passed a medical and the final paperwork on the move will be completed this week. “I am really happy to be part of Aston Villa and I am really proud to be able to pull the shirt on,” Tonev said.
