Terry: Chelsea captain John Terry will be unable to compete in the Club World Cup later this month because of a knee injury, interim manager Rafael Benitez revealed yesterday. The former England centre-back has been told not to travel to Japan for the tournament so as not to jeopardise his recovery from the ligament injury he picked up in the 1-1 draw at home to Liverpool in November.

Cattermole: Sunderland boss Martin O’Neill has confirmed he expects captain Lee Cattermole to be sidelined for the next two months with a knee injury. The midfielder hobbled off during Sunderland’s goalless draw with QPR last month after suffering suspected medial ligament damage and travelled to London to see a specialist.

Closed Doors: Bastia will host Marseille behind closed doors next week after ugly incidents between fans marred their Ligue 1 game at neighbours Ajaccio in October, the French League (LFP) said. The Corsican derby was stopped for five minutes after fans of both teams started fighting and threw fireworks following a mass brawl on the pitch. Two players involved, one from each side, had already been banned for four games.

Cold weather: CSKA Sofia have urged officials to postpone their remaining two matches this year because of the cold weather in Bulgaria. “We sent a request in which we want our last two matches to be postponed to spring,” CSKA’s chief Georgi Iliev said. “Football just cannot be played in Bulgaria after Dec. 1. We want the games to be postponed only because of the dangerous playing conditions.”

Landreau: France reserve goalkeeper Mickael Landreau has reached an agreement to break his contract with Ligue 1 club Lille with immediate effect. The 33-year-old Landreau asked to leave the club having been at odds with coach Rudi Garcia and other staff members for months.

Unruly fans: Ten Marseille fans were kept behind bars yesterday for failing to pay court fines of €500 each for stealing cigarettes and perfumes from Larnaca airport. Eleven fans were found guilty of stealing the goods before a Europa League game against AEL Limassol on Thursday but one of them paid his fine and was released.

Europa League: S. Lisbon vs Videoton 2-1.

The Championship: Black-burn Rovers vs Cardiff 1-4.
