Di Canio: Paolo Di Canio last night resigned as manager of League One side Swindon. In a statement, the fiery Italian cited “a number of broken promises” and claimed his position had 'become untenable' with continuing uncertainty over the club's ownership.

Ince: Paul Ince has revived his managerial career with second-tier Blackpool, where his son Tom is top scorer. The 45-year-old Ince, who made his name in Man. United’s midfield before moving on to play for Inter and Liverpool, has been out of work since leaving as boss of Notts County in 2011.

Villa: David Villa has returned to training with Barcelona but will not be part of the squad to face Milan in the Champions League this week. The Spain striker was back with his team-mates yesterday after twice being hospitalised last week with kidney stones. But he has been left out of the squad for tomorrow’s clash in Milan and will remain in Barcelona to work on his fitness.

Resino: Celta Vigo named Abel Resino as coach yesterday after Paco Herrera paid the price for a 3-1 defeat at Getafe at the weekend. Saturday’s reverse left the north west side third from bottom and in the relegation places, four points adrift of safety.

Violence: A teenaged player underwent emergency eye surgery after the bus of Venezuelan first division team Estudiantes de Merida was attacked following an away match. Estudiantes said Jesus Quintero was injured by flying glass when stones were thrown at the bus by rival fans, following the match away to Llaneros de Guarane. Photographs showed the 18-year-old player suffered a cut around his eye as well as injuries to his lips and hands.

Baros: Former Czech Republic striker Milan Baros has returned to Banik Ostrava, the club where he started his career. The 31-year-old left Galatasaray recently after four years with the Turkish side. The Czech club’s website revealed the player had signed a deal until the end of next season.
