The Sliema local council is still adamant on introducing a parking scheme for local residents. Fortunately, the last time it tried to introduce this asinine plan it was stopped by the Government.
A substantial proportion of Sliema residents are elderly people. They are visited by their grown-up children who always find it very difficult to find parking slots for their short calls. Besides, Sliema has become the main shopping, eating and drinking area of Malta.
When a couple decide to get married or live together, they either plan to rent or buy a property. They don’t shack up on the beach or church parvis. Likewise, anyone who decides to buy a car should buy or rent a garage and not sequester part of a public street to dump one’s vehicle there.
If the council wants to do something practical it should rewrite the names of streets that have been missing for decades. Quite often I am stopped by delivery trucks/vans for names of streets that seem non-existent because the names were removed by new buildings or else worn out.
