A Ukrainian sailor was fined €750 and conditionally discharged for six months after a pistol was found in his luggage at the airport.

Oleksander Halkin, 36, checked in for his flight home on Tuesday and when his luggage was being X-rayed security spotted the weapon.

Mr Halkin, who appeared before Magistrate Claire Stafrace Zammit, admitted to importing the firearm when he had arrived in Malta.
