It used to be claimed that “Beware of Greeks bearing gifts” was the Roman warning about dealing with Greeks, possibly referring to the story about the Trojan horse’s treacherously lethal gift.

Greece claims to be the fountainhead of Western civilisation and its latest contribution to European thought seems to run as follows: borrow, spend and forget about paying it back – that’s somebody else’s problem.
