Eighty-one murders were committed in the 16-year period to 2014, the years 1999 and 2012 being the bloodiest, with 10 homicides reported in those years.

A double murder occurred in 1999 and two double murders in 2012, Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela answered in Parliament last night, replying to a question by Labour MP Anthony Agius Decelis.

A double murder was also committed in 2001 (seven in total) and again in 2013 (six in total).

A total of 74 people were charged with murders, the oldest being 84 years old and the youngest 22. Thirty-seven had been convicted, with many other cases still sub judice.

Some of the accused had passed away during proceedings. One was murdered himself and another committed suicide.

One person had been acquitted, over a 2002 murder.
