More expensive clothing, footwear and newspapers contributed to a 0.17 per cent rise in the retail price index in September, the National Statistics Office said yesterday.

The RPI was 108.26 last month, from 108.08 in August.

The NSO said there was a five per cent increase in the clothing and footwear index, mainly due to seasonally higher prices.

Higher costs of some newspapers led to a 0.75 per cent increase in the recreation and culture index.

Other rises were registered in the price of vegetables, jewellery, furniture, household appliances, personal care products and beverages.

These were partially offset by a drop of 1.68 per cent in the transport and communication index as a result of lower-priced airfares.

In September, the 12-month moving average rate of inflation stood at 2.01 per cent and the annual rate at 0.74 per cent.
