The revelation that Prime Minister Joseph Muscat is hiring his own car for €36,000 for five years, was bad enough but the justifications given for the decision were disgusting to say the least.
One of the reasons given by the Prime Minister was that buying a new car would have cost more. The only problem I, for one, find with this argument is that Muscat’s Alfa Romeo would cost about €8,000 to buy. However, if the Prime Minister thinks that an Alfa Romeo is suitable to drive around for a Prime Minister, why not buy one and it can be used for the next legislature as well? This would have cost the electorate about €8,000 and not the €36,000 pocketed by him.
We are paying €36,000 for a car that could have been bought for €8,000. We are paying €36,000 and, at the end of this legislature, we would have no car anyway, with the new Prime Minister or, perhaps, Muscat himself, having to turn to the electorate to fork out thousands of euros more to buy a new one.
