The result of the consultative referendum showed that only 37.5 per cent, roughly one-third of the eligible votes, voted in favour of the introduction of divorce in Malta, which contradicts the fuss being made and the claim that the electorate spoke loud and clear in favour of divorce. In view of the above result, where 61.5 per cent of the electorate did not vote for the introduction of divorce, those members of Parliament who are against its introduction should feel comfortable voting according to their conscience and against the divorce Bill.
