It was back in 2009 that Red Electrick produced their first music video (for possibly their best-known hit to date Who the Heck is Rek). So it is more than understandable that the band was rather excited about the release a couple of weeks ago of the music video for its latest single The Runaway.

In contrast to its first video, this time around the band took on a passive role in the storyline. This relatively pushes the band into the background as the main actors take the lead. However, the song is still very much the centerpiece of the whole video which, clocking in at over 10 minutes, qualifies more as a short film than a music video.

Recorded and produced at Railway Studios, the new single is evidently inspired by late 1950s surf guitar, more particularly those selections hand-picked by film director Quentin Tarantino for the acclaimed soundtracks of his notorious movies.

The inspiration seems to have also affected the team behind the video production, as various references to Tarantino’s work effectively spice up The Runaway’s visual adaptation. That said, the Wild West theme around which the storyline is based fits in rather well with the song’s evocative sound.

Directed and produced by Jean Pierre Gatt and Colin Azzopardi, the video, filmed at Popeye Village, still leaves the viewer with a few questions at the end, but this certainly seems to have been the intention.

On the other hand, in terms of promoting the single, it would most likely be more effective to produce an edited version that flashes scenes from the full clip in no particular order, thereby shifting the focus onto the song while still arousing interest in the original production.

The Runaway music video is available to stream on Red Electrick’s You Tube channel.
