I agree with Anthony Spiteri’s letter of February 11 regarding the proposed 2 commemorative coin 2012.

One does not have to be an expert in numismatic art or aesthetics to realise that this is a monstrously ugly coin, whose design lacks imagination and artistic merit and whose execution of the modelling is crude and amateurish.

The Currency Advisory Board should know that coin design/engraving is a very specialised art form and, to prevent mediocrity, it should commission only artists who are qualified coin engravers.

The scores of coins, including our euro coins, created by Noel Galea Bason have been always marked by beauty and harmony and have set an inspiring benchmark of excellence.
