Most Maltese drivers are obviously unfamiliar with the Highway Code. This is evidenced by the behaviour of drivers at roundabouts, stop signs, ‘give way’ signs and general road courtesy. Hence an effort must be made to make drivers aware of the Highway Code as much as possible.

Admittedly, new driving licences are based on tests on this codebut I am sure there are quite a few drivers who do not have its latest version.

Hence it might be a good idea to have this code sent to all households with a supporting TV programme to encourage people to read it and abide by it.

Insurance companies, which stand to benefit from such awareness, could be asked to contribute to the costs of this promotion.

May I take this opportunity to repeat a suggestion I had made some time ago for consideration as a possible modification to the Highway Code.

This mainly concerns the way one enters a roundabout, and especially when entering a major road from a side road.

The system used in the UK is that alternate cars from the two streams are allowed to proceed. This system prevents car pile-ups and instils more road courtesy in drivers.
