The Malta Shooting Sport Federation (MSSF), in collaboration with the Malta Air Rifle and Pistol Shooting Club, have just organised a training camp for up-and-coming shooter Gianluca Azzopardi Spiteri.

Funded by the Maltese Olympic Committee through its Youth Elite Athlete Scheme, the training camp was held between October 30 and November 6 at the Larry Vella indoor ranges in Bidnija.

Steve Downes, a qualified ISSF coach who runs a shooting academy in the UK and has coached various top international shooters, presided over the training camp. John Galea, Azzopardi Spiteri’s local coach, attended the sessions.

Azzopardi Spiteri achieved a commendable result in this year’s Europeans, held in Moscow last February. He has also taken part in the World Cup, staged in Munich last June.

In a statement, the MSSF said the training stint came at the right time for the young shooter who is preparing to compete in the Luxembourg Open.

Azzopardi Spiteri is also expected to represent Malta at the 2015 Games of the Small States of Europe in Iceland.
