I refer to Claire Bonello’s opinion piece ‘When fourth estate turns into filth estate’ (The Sunday Times, August 28).

I wish to point out a few things. As a member of the Press Ethics Commission (PEC), Dr Bonello was present during the hearing, and heard and saw the complete opposite version of her claims. Yet she is alleging that “I chose to have the clips merged together so that it appeared that they showed a continuous sequence of action”.

During the hearing, it was explained that all clips were actually separated by a flash. One can conduct a simple Google search and revisit the Joe Mizzi footage to confirm this.

One may also wish to question why the 19-page decision of the PEC left out many important details; or how in the decision, witnesses’ comments have been thwarted. How’s that for a fair trial?

Is it acceptable for Dr Bonello that the PEC had a recorder at its disposal but never bothered to use it?

Readers may wish to know that when our lawyer pointed this out, the Commission’s reaction was that we were definitely wrong in our claims, without even letting us point out these discrepancies.
