Ranier Fsadni’s article (September 26), A Disappointing Pope, provided an insight into the real meaning of Christianity. Referring to the Pope’s vision as expressed recently in an interview he wrote: “It’s prepared to disappoint the Catholic triumphalists by describing the Church as a learning Church and to disappoint non-believers by insisting the Church has something unique to teach.”

This unique faith was referred to a few months ago by Bishop Charles Scicluna as an extraordinary product to promote.

The gist of Christianity is the personal relationship with Jesus Christ sealed when hearing Mass in church and being at one with Him in the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist as opposed to just concentrating on do’s and don’ts. This love of Jesus Christ is summed up in the words of Jean Lacordaire: “A God on the cross! That is all my theology.”

There can be no greater humility than this which is today the forte of Pope Francis. Last month he said: “We are called to rediscover, through the means of social communication as well as by personal contact, the beauty that is at the heart of our existence and journey, the beauty of faith and of the beauty of the encounter with Christ.”

The journey towards complete freedom and eternal joy is not easy but possible with adequate guidance on a sound basis, which already exists. It is then that Jorge Bergoglio will cease to be a disappointing Pope for many more people even when “he does not retract an inch of Christianity’s explicit mission to submit all things to the will of God”. Then there will be a wider grasp of the advantage of this authentic encounter with Jesus Christ.
