A sexual policy for disabled people and better integration in the employment market are being proposed in a national policy on the rights of persons with disability, unveiled yesterday.

Among other proposals are measures to improve accessibility in public and private buildings, better qualified learning support assistants and use of sign language during court proceedings.

The President of the National Commission for Persons with Disability, Oliver Scicluna, said the policy was the most important development in years.

“This will give a much needed direction for this sector and will pave the way for a national strategy and a long-term plan on a number of crucial aspects,” Mr Scicluna said.

Social Policy Minister Michael Farrugia said the government would lead by example by employing 80 persons with disability in Gozo.

Nationalist MP Stephen Spiteri yesterday presented a private members’ Bill proposing autonomy for the commission, which he says should be set up as a parliamentary office.
