The government has been urged to make more use of psychologists in preventing suicide, which is one of the three leading causes of death among 15-44 year olds.

Mental health problems are major risk factors for suicide, the Malta Union and Professional Body of Psychology said on the occasion of World Suicide Prevention Day, today.

In a statement issued jointly with the European Federation of Psychology Associations, the MUPP encouraged the government and all entities involved in promoting and researching mental health to consider more use of psychological knowledge and psychologists to prevent suicide.

Understanding the difficulties faced by people who find themselves at the risk of suicide was crucial, they said.
