Pembroke secured promotion to Division Two after beating Mġarr to make sure they’ll finish in the top two positions of the standings at the end of the season.

Pembroke deserve to play higher football in 2012-13 after a successful campaign during which they only conceded one defeat so far.

A young nucleus in the squad was the main factor for Pembroke’s success with several promising players, including goalkeeper Matthew Calleja Cre-mona, playing their part in the team’s surge up the standings.

Pembroke’s main weapon proved to be their trio in attack with Matthew Borg, Lydon Cilia and Carlo Leonardi scoring 24 goals between them, also aided by the sterling service of Vojko Martinovic from midfield.

Pembroke played below par in the opening half against Mġarr and, in fact, it was the latter who went close to opening the score but efforts from Karl Vella and Chris Abela did not trouble Calleja Cremona in goal.

Pembroke looked better after the break and opened the score on 57 minutes when Borg sped through before hitting past the Mġarr goalkeeper.

Pembroke were now in control and five minutes later Cilia had a ball cleared off the line by Petrovic and then a Martinovic free-kick was saved with difficulty by goalkeeper Borg.

One minute from time Pembroke made sure of the points, and promotion, when substitute Leonardi advanced from the right before hitting low past the Mġarr goalkeeper to make it 2-0.
